BACK UP RINGS / STATIC SEALS

Static seals are seals where both the seal and the mating hardware do not move relative to one another in the application being sealed. Static seals can either seal radially on the inside and outside diameters of the seal or axially on the side walls of the seal, with the latter commonly referred to as a face seal. O-Rings are still the most common and reliable static sealing solution, but they do not always provide the necessary attributes to work in every application.
Back-up Rings or anti-extrusion rings as their name suggests are not sealing devices but purely a device to provide ‘back-up’ protection and support to sealing elements, typically O-Rings. Back-up Rings are generally manufactured from extrusion resistant materials which are normally harder than the seal they are protecting. They are positioned between the sealing device and the clearance/extrusion gap in a sealing application to provide protection from extrusion under pressure and to prevent possible seal damage. In most circumstances the pressure rating, temperature resistance and life expectancy of a sealing element can be vastly increased using the correct choice of back-up ring design, material and size. We suggest the use of a back-up ring device in all applications where possible to help prolong seal life expectancy.
